Positive Leisure

A holistic view on inclusive leisure activities

Our CEO Karel Van Isacker presented “A holistic view on inclusive leisure activities” at the Positive Leisure event in Plovdiv, Bulgaria on 5 July 2019. He focused on leisure as a context for active living, recovery, health and life quality for persons with and without disabilities. The concept that leisure is a basic human right has been advanced in: The United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights (1948). Article 24 of the UN Declaration of Human Rights specifically mandates “the right to rest and leisure including reasonable limitation of work hours and periodic holidays with pay.” The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child has recognized “…the right of the child to rest and leisure, to engage in play and recreational activities appropriate to the age of the child and to participate freely in cultural life and the arts.” The United Nations Principles for Older Persons states that they “…should have access to the educational, cultural, spiritual and recreational resources of society” (Clause 16). The Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) – Article 30 – Participation in cultural life, recreation, leisure and sport “…to enabling persons with disabilities to participate on an equal basis with others [...]
